Saint-Gobain PAM UK Supports Drilling and Tapping Champions at Utility Week Live 2017
Saint-Gobain PAM UK is proud to have sponsored the Institute of Water National Drilling and Tapping Championships for the 23rd consecutive year. The competition was held as part of Utility Week Live 2017, which took place at the NEC in Birmingham in May.
The event is a team time trial, and each team has two contestants, one of whom must be connected to the water industry by being employed either by a water company or contract partner.
Their aim is to drill and tap a 150mm-diameter ductile iron main under pressure, and install a simulated service connection. Skill, dexterity and speed are a prime requirement, but quality of work is paramount, and time penalty points are added if there are any leaks or infringements of the rules and regulations governing the championships.
For the third year running, the Anglian Water team won the competition this year. The team consisted of Jason Barrett as the driller and Lee Maddock as the fitter, who won the competition with an impressive time of 2 minutes 02 seconds.
As part of Saint-Gobain PAM’s sponsorship package the winners will be supported to go on to represent the UK at the American Water Works Association Exhibition in Las Vegas in 2018.
The winning ladies’ team was Wessex Water with a time of 4 minutes 31 seconds, and the team will go on to compete in Amsterdam. There were also awards given for Best Contractor, Best Newcomer and Best Ladies Newcomer.
This year the competition also hosted the World Water Cup, which saw teams from Holland and Mexico compete against 2016 UK champions Anglian Water. The competition consists of each country completing a drill and tap using each of the three countries’ different methods. Anglian Water, representing the UK, became the World Water Cup 2017 champions, their third consecutive WWC title after winning the competition last year.
